Battle of the Oranges

March 29, 2008

The people of the village of Ivrea gather each year to commemorate the downfall of a tyrant, and to compete between fraternities to prove their worth and superiority. And so we, too, gather in Windmasters Hill, to compete with friends and celebrate the arrival of spring.

Bring your fraternity (household, group of friends, random strangers) of just you and your best friend or up to nine of your closest friends (or, again, random strangers. Limit of two peers, not two peerages)! Demonstrate your mastery of the arts and wage battle on the melee field. The winning fraternity shall be that which garners the most accolades and performs best in all areas of competition (measured by points awarded for performance in all A&S, combat, and service, and given by the populace at their discretion. So you don't have to fight to win, if your A&S is unbeatable).

Do you not wish to compete as a fraternity? Come anyway and judge your fellows' performances, and garner accolades for yourself!

Prizes will be given for the fraternity with the best overall performance (relative to size), and the individual with the best overall performance, as well as for the individual A&S competitions.

A simple lunch will be provided starting at 11:30.

The day will conclude with a sumptuous feast prepared by Lady Guenìevre de Monmarch́e!

Martial Activities:
Come try your might against your fellow armored and rapier fighters as you battle for control of the village of Ivrea. And it wouldn't be warfare in Italy without Genovese bowmen, so combat archers are welcome! Points for fraternities will be awarded for prowess and valor by observers, and success on the melee field!

Arts & Sciences Activities:
Arts and Sciences points awarded in all competitions will further the efforts of your team to win the day's prize. Youth may enter all competitions and will be given age-appropriate feedback based on the age of the artist indicated on the display form.

Cooking Competition:
Edible creations featuring the theme (not just the flavor or the color . . . be creative!) of "orange." Recipes required; documentation encouraged.

Static A&S Competition:
Items in any media used for the celebration of Carnival or other similar festivals encouraging relaxed morals, populace misrule, or disregard of government authority. Foolery and impudence welcomed! Documentation required.

Live Performance Competition:
Stir the populace to overthrow the dictator, to cast off the bonds of morality and sane conduct, and to embrace the spirit of Carnival through music, verse, speeches or short theatrical presentations (10 minutes or less). Sign up for one or more performances (schedule permitting) on the battlefield.

Costume Competition:
Throughout the day the populace can award points to the Lords and Ladies in the best Carnival costuming.

Children's Activities:
Even your children can contribute to the success of your fraternity. Activities run by Lady Mariana de Salamanca will be held in the feast hall through the day, and she'll be awarding points to the participants.
